At Downtown Dental Care, your oral health and wellbeing is important. We strive to provide you with the best possible care in a safe and comfortable environment. In order to help you maintain optimal oral health, we provide you with dental cleanings and oral exams.
A crucial part of maintaining your oral health is by regular brushing and flossing. However, even the most diligent of brushers can miss spots, leaving these difficult to reach areas susceptible to the effects of harmful bacteria - tooth decay and gum disease. You might think you're doing just fine, but the truth is, the earliest signs of gum disease (gingivitis) don't exhibit any symptoms. You could have it and not even know it.
Dr. Christianson, along with our team of expertly trained dental hygienists, are here to help. It is recommended that you come in for visits at least once every six months for a professional cleaning. We will help you to prevent the damages caused by bacteria, such as cavities and tooth loss. We do this using a variety of different tools, most likely very different from those in your bathroom at home. We use specially shaped tools to scrape plaque and tartar (hardened plaque that cannot be removed with normal brushing) from the surface of your teeth and near the gum line. Next, we use another tool to polish your teeth dazzling clean.
If having your teeth cleaned sends you in a panic, ask us about our intraoral cameras or sedation options. With an intraoral, you can see exactly what we see and what we'e doing projected onto a monitor. If that isn't enough to ease your fears, our sedation options can help you to relax through the process.
After your teeth are cleaned, Dr. Christianson, or one of the hygienists, will perform a thorough oral exam. This exam checks on the health of your mouth, looking for anything that might be wrong. It can also point out health issues that might have nothing to do with your mouth as well, such as heart disease or diabetes. These exams are also important for pregnant women, as some oral health issues can lead to premature birth and low birth weight.
We check your teeth thoroughly for signs of decay and your gums for indications of gum disease. We also look at your teeth for other signs of damage, such as cracks, chips and fractures. We check the condition of fillings and sealants if you have any, making sure they are still intact and don't need to be replaced. We also check the condition of any other oral appliances you might have - crowns, veneers, bridges, dentures, implants. Their condition is important to maintaining good oral health as well. During the exam, we will take the time to speak with you, too. You may be asked about your oral hygiene habits or lifestyle habits, such as smoking or drinking. We will discuss any concerns about your oral health that we may have encountered during the exam. You will also be given a chance to ask any questions and voice your concerns, all in an effort to make certain your mouth is as healthy as possible.
Cleanings and exams offer a number of benefits. Your teeth get a thorough cleaning, and may even appear whiter. Your breath is freshened. Exams help to spot any issues early on, and allow for intervention before they become worse. To schedule your next cleaning and exam, be sure to give us a call today at (503) 420-7600!
