Children’s Dentistry Portland, OR
As a family dentist, we are happy to serve your children in their dental care. Establishing a good working relationship between your child and Dr. Christianson while also assisting your child in feeling comfortable in the dental chair can make a lifelong difference in their oral health. Studies have shown that fears that were developed in childhood passed with the child into adulthood, we want to help alleviate fears that come with dentistry, and educate parents and children on proper oral hygiene. Together, you, Dr. Christianson, and our staff at Downtown Dental Care can make a difference for your child.
Part of every dental cleaning and checkup is a discussion about home hygiene. We love to provide tips, hints, and suggestions that will broaden the success of caring for your child’s teeth daily. Children are in the very early learning phase of caring for their teeth, and they are incapable of understanding that choices they make now, can impact them later.
Depending on the child’s age, we will demonstrate for the parent or child, the proper way to hold the toothbrush and apply it to their teeth. There is a bit of skill to it. We explain the importance of placing the toothbrush at a 90-degree angle and brushing along the rim between their teeth and gums, along with being sure to get the front and back of every tooth, even the ones way in the back that are so often missed.
We promote early flossing with parent assistance. Introducing flossing early will help make it part of their normal routine. Gum disease is a significant problem in adults; we would like to begin the education of caring for their gums immediately.
Dental cleanings are an important step in dental health. It provides us the opportunity to catch debris that was missed, take a glance at the health of your child’s teeth, note the progress of incoming teeth, and help your child grow used to dental work. We take the time to show them the tools involved and the process of the cleaning. Once your child has a majority of their adult teeth, we will then place a dental sealant on their teeth.
Sealants are a great advancement in dentistry. A fast, painless procedure, we take a soft brush and literally paint a plastic coating on the biting surfaces of your child’s back molars. These teeth are the most susceptible to developing cavities. By coating these teeth in sealants, we reduce the likelihood of developing a cavity significantly. Traditionally, a cavity seemed to be almost a rite of passage to children, just about every child eventually had one. With sealants, more and more children are reaching adulthood without ever experiencing a cavity, and needing a dental filling. This increases the overall health of their teeth, helping them keep them longer.
Your child’s bite is important to their oral health. There are some problems that can arise, from overcrowding to teeth that are impacted. We can spot those issues and make recommendations based on your child’s need. We may suggest working with an orthodontist. Current information tells us that meeting with an orthodontist around the age of seven can reduce the time or need of braces.
